The Van Hunks fogger, originally developed by Gravitron Special Effects in Cape Town for its own use, gradually gained traction among other special effects companies, leading to increased demand.

The name was inspired by the local legend of Van Hunks. Legend has it that Van Hunks, a Dutch pirate, challenged the devil to a pipe-smoking contest on Table Mountain in Cape Town. The two smoked for days, creating the famous "tablecloth" cloud formation. Van Hunks eventually won the contest, but the devil was so enraged that he vanished in a puff of smoke, leaving Table Mountain covered in his tobacco smoke.
